How to Declutter Your Home Room by Room
19 January 2026 · 5 min read · GlowSpark

Clutter builds up slowly, then suddenly a whole room feels heavy and hard to clean. The fix is not a single marathon weekend. It is working through one room at a time with a clear method, so nothing gets half-finished. Here is a room-by-room plan you can spread over a few evenings.
Start with the four-box method
Before you touch a drawer, grab four containers and label them:
- Keep: items you use and have a home for.
- Donate or sell: good condition, but not for you.
- Bin or recycle: broken, expired or beyond use.
- Relocate: belongs in another room.
Every object goes in a box. Nothing goes back for now. This one rule stops decluttering from turning into tidying.
Kitchen
Start with the cupboards and the fridge. Bin anything past its date and any gadget you have not touched in a year. Group what is left by use: baking, food storage, everyday plates. Keep worktops as clear as possible, as bare surfaces are faster to wipe down.
Living room
Tackle the surfaces first: coffee table, shelves and the media unit. Recycle old magazines, corral remotes and cables into one box, and thin out the ornaments. Be honest about DVDs, books and games you will never return to.

Bedroom and wardrobe
Clothes are the hardest, so use a simple test: if you have not worn it in a year and it is not seasonal or sentimental, let it go. Take everything off the rail, sort it, and only hang back what you will actually wear.
- Match and pair socks, and bin the odd ones.
- Clear the floordrobe and the pile on the chair.
- Store off-season clothes under the bed to free the wardrobe.
Bathroom
Empty the cabinet and check every date. Old medicines, dried-out mascara and half-used bottles all go. Keep only what you use weekly within reach, and stash spares out of sight.
Hallway and entryway
This is the first thing you see, so make it count. Hang only current-season coats, pair up the shoes, and add a bowl or hook for keys. A clear entrance makes the whole home feel calmer.
Keep the clutter from coming back
- One in, one out: a new item means an old one leaves.
- A ten-minute reset each evening stops piles rebuilding.
- Book donations in the diary so the bags actually leave the house.
