How to Clean Your Home Fast Before Guests Arrive
3 June 2026 · 4 min read · GlowSpark

We have all been there: guests are half an hour away and the house looks like a bomb hit it. The trick to a fast tidy-up is not to clean everything, but to focus on what visitors actually notice and ignore the rest. Here is a room-by-room plan to make your home feel welcoming in about half an hour.
Focus on what guests actually see
Your guests will use the hallway, living room, bathroom and maybe the kitchen. They will not inspect your wardrobes or the spare room. Shut the doors on rooms they will not enter and spend your time where it counts. Clear surfaces and a fresh smell do more than a spotless skirting board nobody looks at.
Start with a clutter sweep
Grab a laundry basket and walk through each room, dropping in anything out of place: stray shoes, post, toys, mugs. Do not sort it now, just clear the surfaces. Pop the basket in a bedroom to deal with later. A clear room instantly looks clean, even before you wipe anything.
The living room, 5 minutes
- Plump the cushions and fold any throws.
- Clear mugs, glasses and clutter from the coffee table.
- Do a quick vacuum or sweep of the main walkways only.
- Give the coffee table and TV stand a fast wipe.

The bathroom, 5 minutes
This is the one room every guest will use, so it matters most.
- Wipe the sink, taps and toilet with a bathroom spray.
- Swish the toilet brush round the bowl.
- Put out a clean hand towel and check there is loo roll.
- Buff the mirror and empty the bin.
The kitchen, 5 minutes
- Load the dishwasher, or stack the washing-up out of sight.
- Wipe the worktops and hob.
- Give the floor a quick sweep.
- Take the bins out if they are full.
Finishing touches
Small details make a home feel cared for. Open a window for a few minutes to freshen the air, then light a candle or use a diffuser. Warm, dimmer lighting is more forgiving than bright overhead lights and hides a lot. A quick spritz of fabric spray on the sofa leaves the room smelling clean.
If you host regularly
For parties or big family gatherings, it pays to start fresh rather than papering over grime. A deep clean the day before means you only need a light tidy on the day. You can book a GlowSpark cleaner to take that job off your plate entirely.
Hosting should be fun, not frantic. GlowSpark cleaners are vetted and cost from £19 an hour, so you can greet your guests relaxed.
