How to Clean Stainless Steel Appliances Without Streaks

Stainless steel looks sleek until it is covered in fingerprints, water spots and greasy smears. The good news is that a streak-free finish takes only a cloth, a little care and one simple rule: always work with the grain. Here is how to clean stainless steel appliances so they stay bright.

Find the grain first

Brushed stainless steel has a direction to it, much like wood. Look closely and you will see fine lines running either left to right or up and down. Always wipe along those lines, never across them or in circles. Cleaning against the grain traps residue in the tiny grooves and leaves the streaks you are trying to avoid.

What you will need

• Two microfibre cloths, one damp and one dry
• Warm water with a single drop of washing-up liquid
• White vinegar in a spray bottle for water spots
• A little olive oil or baby oil for the final polish

Step by step

1. Wipe away loose grime

Dampen a microfibre cloth with warm, soapy water and wipe the whole surface along the grain. This lifts everyday grease and food splashes. Wring the cloth out well, as too much water can leave spots of its own.

2. Tackle water spots and smears

Spray white vinegar lightly over any stubborn marks or hard-water spots, then wipe along the grain. Vinegar cuts through mineral deposits and grease without scratching. Follow with a clean, damp cloth so no vinegar is left behind.

3. Dry thoroughly

Buff the surface dry with the second, clean microfibre cloth. Drying straight away is the single most important step for a streak-free finish, because it stops water drying into spots.

4. Polish to a shine

Put a few drops of olive oil or baby oil on a dry cloth and wipe a thin film along the grain, then buff off the excess. This fills fine scratches, repels fingerprints and leaves a gentle mirror shine.

Removing fingerprints from fridges and hobs

Fingerprints are oily, so water alone will not shift them. A cloth barely dampened with washing-up liquid, followed by a dry buff, removes them fast. The oil polish in step 4 keeps new prints from sticking, which is handy on fridge doors that get touched all day.

What to avoid

• Abrasive pads and scourers: they scratch the finish permanently.
• Bleach and chlorine cleaners: they can pit and stain the steel.
• Cleaning in circles: always follow the grain instead.
