How to Clean Carpets and Rugs at Home
9 December 2025 · 4 min read · GlowSpark

Carpets and rugs trap dust, grit and spills every day, which dulls the colour and holds odours. You do not need a professional every time. With the right routine and quick action on spills, you can keep them fresh at home. Here is how.
Vacuum properly and often
Most carpet wear is caused by grit grinding into the fibres, so regular vacuuming does more than any deep clean. Vacuum high-traffic areas twice a week and quieter rooms weekly.
- Go slowly, especially on the return stroke, so the machine lifts embedded dirt.
- Pass over busy areas in two directions to raise the pile.
- Move light furniture now and then to reach hidden dust.
- Empty the cylinder or change the bag before it is full, or suction drops.
Act fast on spills
The golden rule is blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and frays the fibres. Press a clean cloth or kitchen paper onto the spill to lift as much as possible, then treat the mark, working from the outside in.
Common stains
- Red wine: blot, then dab with washing-up liquid and white vinegar in warm water.
- Coffee and tea: the same solution, rinsed with clean water and blotted dry.
- Mud: let it dry fully, vacuum the crumbs, then treat any remaining mark.
- Grease: sprinkle bicarbonate of soda to absorb the oil, leave 15 minutes, vacuum, then treat.
- Pet accidents: blot, clean with vinegar solution, then finish with an enzyme cleaner to remove the smell.
Always test any solution on a hidden corner first to check the colours are fast.

Deep clean and deodorise
Every few months, refresh the whole carpet. Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda across it, leave it for 20 minutes to an hour, then vacuum thoroughly to lift odours. For a deeper result, hire a carpet-cleaning machine or use a spray-and-extract cleaner, following the drying times on the label.
Caring for rugs
Rugs are easier to clean because you can move them.
- Shake, or hang and beat, smaller rugs outdoors to knock out dust.
- Vacuum both sides, as grit collects underneath.
- Check the care label. Wool and natural fibres dislike harsh chemicals and heavy soaking.
- Rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
Dry it out to avoid mould
Damp is the enemy. After any wet clean, open windows, use a fan, and do not walk on the carpet or replace furniture until it is fully dry. A carpet left damp will smell musty and can grow mould underneath.
